Background

West Berkshire Council covers a wide area, ranging from Hungerford, west of Newbury, right across to the west side of Reading. It is the Council's priority to provide their residents with easy access to public services and, as such, they recognised that there was a need to open up an office close to a large concentration of residents in the East Reading area.

The Council was presented with the opportunity of taking an unoccupied concession at the Sainsbury's Superstore at Calcot to use as a local enquiry centre and Council project manager Pat Noble approached Newbury Interiors to design and fit out the new offices.

Believed to be the first council office to be located in a supermarket, it is an ideal location as it already offers easy transport access and free parking.

Scope of works

  • Present and agree designs
  • Removal of existing temporary partitions
  • Build partitions to create meeting room, office and reception area
  • Re-screed floor, lay carpet, laminate flooring to match the Council's Newbury offices
  • Decoration of walls
  • Installation of security shutters and exterior doors
  • Main office electrical and lighting connection
  • Create basic kitchen area

Critical issues

The new enquiry centre comprises of a reception area and enquiry desks separated by privacy screens where visitors to the office can find out about Council services including planning, housing benefits and travel tokens.

In addition to working within the remit of the Council's requirements, Newbury Interiors were required to work in conjunction with a Sainsbury's project manager to ensure the work complied with Sainsbury's building regulations, as the centre is located within the Sainsbury's Superstore.

The project was also completed to a tight deadline and work had to be carried out right up until the official ceremony where the Council Chairman opened the office.

The enquiry centre has proved to be an overwhelming success for the Council and very popular with local residents who have used it extensively.

What the client said

Pat Noble, Facilities Operations Manager, West Berkshire Council quoted:

"We have a very good working relationship with Newbury Interiors. We worked together to create a plan for the new offices which were presented to the Council and approved. Their staff are reliable, supportive and adaptable to changes to the project plans, resulting in a project that was completed on time, within budget and to our satisfaction."
