Background
Huawei is a world leader in telecoms and IT networking products. Founded in China in 1988, the company employs some 44,000 staff worldwide, and achieved a turnover of $8 billion in 2005/6.
Huawei needed to get its Basingstoke office up and running in a very short timescale. In October 2005 the electronics giant asked Newbury Interiors to create a design that would allow them to accommodate 150 staff in the new office by 17th December that year, and a further 122 in January 2006.
Scope of works
- Build open plan office space
- Build eight cellular (one-person) offices
- Build three multi-occupancy offices
- Build seven meeting rooms, to accommodate up to 90 people
- Build a canteen to seat up to 120
- Build three tea points
- Build a server/communications room
- Build three storage rooms
- Install power and data cabling for 168 desks
Critical issues
Huawei's key priority was that the first 150 of its 272-strong Basingstoke workforce should be in the premises by 17th December 2005 - just six weeks after work was to begin. The remaining 122 were to be in during January 2006.
Newbury Interiors created a phased programme of work which prioritised those aspects of the project which were critical to the office's ability to accommodate the staff, with the rest of the work being undertaken after the staff had arrived. The staff were in on time, and the project was completed in January 2006.
What the client said
"Newbury Interiors were able to come up with a highly competitive design that could be - and was - implemented within our extremely tight timescales," said David McCarthy, Facilities Manager at Huawei. "They did an outstanding job, they are a great team to work with, they respond quickly and they give superb value for money"
